“Confidence is a lot of this game or any game. If you don’t think you can, you won’t.”
—JERRY WEST
CORRELATIONS AND CONNECTIONS
People tend to remember the story, not the information. Stories help develop connections with others as they can relate to and identify with themes from the tale. The stronger you become at observing these themes, the more you are able to develop your awareness, which in turn helps you become more capable at drawing lessons from day-to-day life. This being said, keep an eye out for parallels from your life experiences and observations—often these will offer life lessons or hacks. They not only benefit you, but are a great way to help mentor and develop people that you work with, serve and support. It also helps to find new ways and methods to aid your growth and development.
To demonstrate this point, I want to mention a story I once read abouat a world-famous sushi chef who moved from New York to Tokyo. He spoke about his career as a sushi chef and his experience as a blackbelt in karate in addition to his culinary travels. In the book, he attributed much of his success as a sushi chef to his experience in martial arts, and while there’s not a direct correlation between the discipline of martial arts and being a successful chef, his success extended primarily from how he mastered his craft, which manifested in the way he executed his job and his view of life.

I enjoy working out regularly and my time at the gym is not just to stay in shape or to keep up with my 12-year-old son. I also go there because it’s the place where I let my thoughts come together. This could be when I’m creating a concept for a keynote or workshop, or just working through an issue.
Renowned author John Maxwell says his place is his thinking chair. Identify the place you go to be with your thoughts, work on a problem, or find a solution. Is it out running, hiking, exercising, meditating, or in the shower?
SELF-REFLECTION
While I spend time at the gym, my guilty pleasure is people watching. As I look for life lessons to bring to my teaching, I enjoy observing how people interact and perform in life. Needless to say, we are each such fascinating creatures.
One gym goer who fascinates me in particular is a man I’ve noticed who works out regularly. And though I’m only watching him working out, I feel like I’m the one who’s going to pull a muscle. He has a—to put it nicely—peculiar way of doing his exercises. Truthfully it’s like watching a woodpecker …
